Secondary school student work experience program

We support high school students with work experience placements commencing in June and November/December each year. As a work experience student you will have the opportunity to shadow clinical and professional staff, and get first-hand experience in what it’s like to work at a hospital.

What we offer

Eastern Health is one of the largest metropolitan health services in Victoria and supports your health career aspirations by providing work experience opportunities in:

Placements are available at most of our hospital sites including Angliss, Blackburn, Box Hill, Maroondah, Murrenda, Peter James Centre and Wantirna. Your site allocation is dependant on the clinical area you are assigned to.

We welcome applications from students of all year levels, but priority will be supportive of Year 10 students.

RUSON (Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing)

The Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing (RUSON) position is open to nursing students currently studying the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing /Bachelor of Midwifery, or pre-registration Masters of Nursing Practice. It is an opportunity to earn while you learn in a health care environment.

A RUSON may work in the acute, sub acute health care environment and/or aged setting as part of the healthcare team, assisting nurses to provide patient care. RUSONs are supervised by registered nursing staff and may complete a range of activities such as personal hygiene, mobility, administration and observations (once assessed). RUSOM (Registered Undergraduate Student of Midwifery)

The Registered Undergraduate Student of Midwifery (RUSOM) position is open to midwifery students currently studying the Bachelor of Midwifery or a Bachelor of Nursing /Bachelor of Midwifery degree. It is an opportunity to earn while you learn in a health care environment.

A RUSOM works in the Maternity Services areas as part of a healthcare team, assisting midwives to provide patient care. EN to RN Transition Scholarship Program

The Enrolled Nurse (EN) to Registered Nurse (RN) transition scholarship is available to ENs who are employed in a Victorian public health service and commencing their transition course in 2023 or 2024. This Department of Health initiative provides financial support to ENs seeking to upskill their qualification and gain registration as an RN.

The full scholarship of $11,000 will be provided to eligible ENs over 4 years as follows:

  • $2,500 a year for 2 years of study
  • $3,000 a year for 2 years of employment, once study is completed and while employed in a Victorian public health service.

Applications are via an Expression of Interest directly to the health service.

We proudly offer Aboriginal Cadetship Programs for nursing, midwifery and allied health students studying health related courses at University and TAFE.

About our Program

Our Cadetship program offers you valuable paid work experience working in health care while you are studying. It is a great way to blend academic learning with practical work whilst developing both professionally and personally.

As a cadet you will be employed as a RUSON/M (Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing/ Midwifery) or AHA (Allied Health Assistant).

You will be offered 40 shifts in the health service and we will work closely with you to ensure the timing works with your study and personal commitments.

Our cadetship program is funded through Department of Health grants.

Eligibility

You are welcome to apply if you are living in Victoria or a cross border community and have completed at least your first year of study, with pass grades in all subjects.

Eligible students include those studying the following:

  • Nursing and/ or Midwifery (Bachelor or pre-registration entry Masters)
  • Diploma of Nursing
  • Bachelor or Masters entry Allied Health courses including:
    • Dietetics
    • Occupational Therapy
    • Physiotherapy
    • Podiatry
    • Psychology
    • Social Work
    • Speech Pathology
    • Biomedical Science and related fields
    • Pharmacy
